TISSUE and CELL BANK WITH ADVANCED THERAPY MEDICINAL PRODUCT MANUFACTURING FACILITY

The Cell Bank is a specialist laboratory of the Department of Cell Biology at the Jagiellonian University Faculty of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biotechnology.

The Head of the Cell Bank, Prof. Justyna Drukała was the first person in Poland to culture skin cells in vitro, which were then transplanted to a patient to treat a wound.

In accordance with the highest standard of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), the Cell Bank manufactures Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMPs) used to save the lives of patients, where traditional methods of treatment have not proved successful, and to help them to make a full recovery.

By supplying advanced therapy medicinal products to clinical units, the activity of the Cell Bank of the Department of Cell Biology of the JU FBBB has a direct impact on public health, as it allows innovative wound healing procedures to be used where no other effective treatment is available, especially in the case of severe life-threatening burns. The Cell Bank supplies products to hospitals, providing specialist support on formal questions relating to the possibility and, above all, the safety of using innovative treatments.

As a member of the Commission of Experts of the Polish Society for the Treatment of Burns, specialising in Procedures for the Treatment of Burns in Poland, Professor Drukała is involved in discussing, and deploying new strategies for the treatment of wounds. As a member of the Polish National Transplants Council's Development Strategy Team and a member of the Polish Supreme Medical Council's team of experts on cell therapy and stem cells, she is an active spokesperson and plays an active part in setting out a position on issues concerning therapy with the use of advanced therapy medicinal products.

The Cell Bank also provides services to external entities in the optimisation and deployment of innovative concepts for medicinal products. Its expertise in this area allows the product concept to be successfully prepared for clinical trials.
